License Classification and Control

Describes detecting and classifying ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot license types (business vs individual). Covers policy configuration to monitor, warn, or block by license.

Updated over a month ago

SurePath AI intercepts traffic between users and GenAI services, creating a unique opportunity to detect and classify the type of license being used during these interactions. This capability allows organizations to monitor license types and enforce policies based on whether users are accessing GenAI services through appropriate business-grade licenses or individual consumer licenses.

How license classification works

License classification automatically identifies the license type when users interact with supported GenAI services. This detection happens transparently as traffic flows through SurePath AI, requiring no additional configuration or user action.

SurePath AI categorizes licenses into two groups: business licenses and individual licenses. Business licenses are typically associated with cost and include features that protect the security and privacy of organizational data. These licenses generally allow IT admins to configure privacy settings, data controls, and other governance features for their organizations.

Individual licenses, by contrast, are consumer-grade offerings that typically lack enterprise controls and may not provide the same level of data protection. These licenses are designed for personal use and do not offer the administrative capabilities required for organizational governance.

License categories and examples

Business licenses

Business licenses include enterprise and team subscriptions that provide organizational controls and enhanced data protection. For ChatGPT, this includes ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Business. For GitHub Copilot, this includes GitHub Copilot Business and GitHub Copilot Enterprise.

Individual licenses

Individual licenses are consumer-tier subscriptions intended for personal use. For ChatGPT, this includes ChatGPT Free, ChatGPT Plus, and ChatGPT Pro. For GitHub Copilot, this includes GitHub Copilot Individual.

Service support

License classification is currently supported for ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, with support for additional services coming soon. To view which services support license classification, admins can check the Public Service Catalog where services display their SurePath AI support capabilities.

Viewing license information

When a license is detected for a user interaction, the license type appears in the User Event Overview. This provides admins with visibility into which license types are being used across the organization, helping identify potential compliance risks or shadow IT concerns.

Configuring license controls

Admins can configure license-based controls in the Services tab of both the Default Policy and Group Policies (see Understanding policies for an overview of how Default and Group Policies work together). To access these settings:

  • Navigate to Default Policy or Group Policies in the GOVERN section

  • Select the Services tab

  • Configure license controls for supported services

These controls allow organizations to enforce policies based on license type, such as blocking access to individual licenses while allowing business licenses, or monitoring usage patterns across different license types.
